Teaching

Helen is a Fellow of the University of Exeter. At the University's Centre for Historical Maritime Studies she teaches maritime business history to undergraduates and Master's students.

Her teaching has included an online course, The Lost World of the sailing Ships, about the men and women of the many mariner communities of the nineteenth century. She is currently working on the development of an innovative online MA in Naval History due to be released shortly.

Enterprising Britons is an introduction to the many small family firms in the nineteenth century. It includes a guide to primary sources relating to advertising, customer relations, accounting, managing managers, workforce challenges and women in business.

MA in Maritime History: this covers British maritime expansion from 1450 to 1960. It examines the nature of the growth of the mercantile fleet and its decline in the twentieth century and covers technological advances, economic impact and social change across the centuries.
